  2. ZETAFAX Evaluation System Release Notes - Version 5.50a

  5. This is an evaluation version of Zetafax, the fax gateway for Windows,
  6. Windows NT and Windows 95.  It is a fully working 5 user version, which
  7. can be used to send and receive faxes with a Class 2 or Class 2.0 
  8. fax modem.  It includes the API toolkit option, though not the API
  9. developer libraries.
  10.  
  11. The evaluation system is a slightly cut down version of the full Zetafax
  12. product, which prints "Zetafax evaluation system" in the background of
  13. faxes which it sends.
  14.  
  15. The software should be installed from the machine which has the fax modem
  16. connected (which will become the fax server, though this does not need
  17. to be a dedicated PC).  If you specify a network drive to install the
  18. files on, you will be able to configure other workstations on the network
  19. to run as Zetafax workstations (click on the README icon after
  20. installation for more details).

  47. The Zetafax server allows received faxes to be delivered direct to your 
  48. e-mail account with MAPI compliant e-mail systems.  
  49.  
  50. The Zetafax E-mail Gateway allow faxes to be sent and received using e-mail 
  51. clients on Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Mail, Lotus Notes, cc:Mail and 
  52. Novell Groupwise.  This is installed separately after the Zetafax
  53. server software has been installed and configured.  Users then have the
  54. choice of using the Zetafax client, their e-mail client, or both to 
  55. submit and monitor the progress of faxes.

  68. Using Zetafax with Brooktrout and Gammafax intelligent fax boards
  69. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

  71. The 32-bit (Intel) Zetafax Server under Windows NT supports Brooktrout fax
  72. boards (TR111, TR112, TR114 and TruFax models), and Gammafax fax boards.  
  73. These are not supported by this evaluation system.

  76. Compatibility issues with other software
  77. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

  79. 1.  Creating coversheets with Windows 95.
  80.  
  81.     The Zetafax printer driver under Windows 95 does not support FaxMerge 
  82.     commands, used when creating coversheets.  If you wish to create new 
  83.     coversheet foreground files (rather than use one of the standard files 
  84.     supplied) it is therefore simplest to do this from a Windows 3.x or 
  85.     Windows NT PC.
  86.  
  87.     If you only have Windows 95 workstations available, you can create
  88.     a new coversheet foreground file by configuring an Epson LQ-1000
  89.     printer driver, configured to print to file C:\WINDOWS\ZETAFAX.SPL.  
  90.     The Epson resident fonts (eg "Roman 10cpi") behave in the same way 
  91.     as the Zetafax fonts referred to in the online help.

  94. 2.  Changing paper size in Word for Windows 2.0
  95.  
  96.     Word for Windows version 2.0 does not notify printers of the paper
  97.     size which it wishes to use.  Therefore when using Word with the
  98.     Zetafax printer you should ensure that the paper size configured
  99.     in printer setup agrees with Word's page setup size.

  101.     Word 6.0 has this problem corrected.

  104. 3.  Use with Sun PC NFS
  105.  
  106.     PC NFS uses a special character in file names to identify Unix
  107.     files with names longer than the standard DOS 8+3 format.
  108.     By default this is the tilda character '~'.  If you create a
  109.     file on a PC whose name contains this character, then do a
  110.     DIR, the file has a different name (eg "~TEST000.TMP" gets
  111.     stored as "~TEST~RA.TMP").
  112.  
  113.     Zetafax uses file names which contain tilda characters, and
  114.     therefore does not work correctly when PC NFS changes the
  115.     file names in this manner.  You can correct the problem by
  116.     telling NFS to use another character (eg '%').  This is done
  117.     by modifying the line which loads PCNFS.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS
  118.     file on each PC, adding a parameter "/C%" to the end - eg
  119.  
  120.         Device = C:\NFS\PCNFS.SYS /C%

  123. 4.  Background printing in Microsoft Word 6.0
  124.  
  125.     When you print to the Zetafax printer from an application
  126.     Zetafax waits until printing has finished before displaying
  127.     the addressing dialog box, in case the file being printed
  128.     contains any automatic addressing commands.
  129.  
  130.     With most applications this means that the addressing dialog
  131.     is displayed immediately the application's "Printing page nnn"
  132.     message box is removed.  However Word 6.0 (and some other
  133.     applications) performs printing in the background, giving
  134.     just a small visual indication on the status bar to say that it
  135.     is in progress.
  136.  
  137.     With Word 6.0, background printing to the Zetafax printer is
  138.     now disabled.  If you install Word after installing Zetafax,
  139.     you should run the Zetafax Workstation Setup program and
  140.     choose the "update programs" option to make this change.

  143. 5.  Using embedded addressing commands with WordPerfect 5.1
  144.  
  145.     Faxes may be addressed automatically by including special
  146.     commands in the text of the fax (eg "%%[FAX:1234]"), using one
  147.     of the Zetafax fonts.  However, this is not currently supported 
  148.     under WordPerfect 5.1 (as it prints each character of the command
  149.     individually).

  152. 6.  Running server over Windows NT 3.5 Netware client
  153.  
  154.     There is a compatibility problem between the Windows NT Netware
  155.     client software and certain versions of Novell, causing an error
  156.     when reading data which has just been written.  The Zetafax
  157.     server programs check for this problem while running, and if
  158.     detected an error message is displayed and the server will
  159.     be shutdown.  If this occurs it may be corrected as follows.
  160.  
  161.     If you are running the server on a Windows NT PC, using a Novell
  162.     server for the shared files, you should install the ServerArea files
  163.     (normally in zfax\SERVER) on the server PCs local disk instead of
  164.     on the fileserver.  If you have already installed Zetafax you can
  165.     change this by copying the SERVER directory to the local disk
  166.     (including any empty subdirectories), then editing the [SERVER]
  167.     section in the ZETAFAX.INI file to change the ServerArea: line.
  168.  
  169.     This is due to faults in the standard version of the Netware client
  170.     software for Windows NT when used with older versions of Novell
  171.     (3.11), and therefore may not be necessary with later versions of
  172.     the Netware client.

  175. 7.  Using FaxMerge and addressing commands with Microsoft Word 97
  176.  
  177.     In Microsoft Word 97 the default method of printing text has changed,
  178.     to prevent text sizes changing when switching between printers.
  179.     Instead of sending complete strings of text to the printer, it
  180.     sends individual characters, with minor positioning changes between
  181.     each character.
  182.  
  183.     To use embedded addressing and FaxMerge commands with Word 97, with
  184.     both the Zetafax printer and the Epson LQ-1000, it is necessary to 
  185.     revert to the previous behaviour.  This can be done by using the 
  186.     Tools | Options menu choice, and selecting (checking) the option
  187.     "Use printer metrics to lay out document".  This affects the
  188.     current document only.
  189.  
  190.     Note that this option must also be changed to create new
  191.     coversheet foreground files using Word 97.

  194. 8.  Layout problems with tables using Microsoft Word 97
  195.  
  196.     Microsoft Word 97 gives problems when used with printers which do
  197.     not have the same resolution vertically and horizontally (ie
  198.     which do not have "square" pixels) - this includes fax printers,
  199.     which are 204 x 196 dpi.  The symptom is that the table text is
  200.     out of step with the lines of the table.
  201.  
  202.     A service pack for Word 97 has now been released which corrects
  203.     the problem, and is available from the Microsoft Web site.  For
  204.     sites who have not yet installed this update, the new Zetafax Printer 
  205.     for Windows NT 4.0 and NT 3.51 include a resolution of 200 x 200 dpi
  206.     - selecting this will also correct the problem.
